THE INEVITABLE DEATH OF AFRICAN LANGUAGES:
I was recently challenged by one of my children on the question of Language, specifically, Runyankore. I have been harassing him over his poor Runyankore. So recently he asked me: "Taata, this Runyankore you want us to speak fluently, where shall we speak it...If there are no Banyankore customs left, our Runyankore will talk about what?" He went on: "Like now we kneel when proposing to a woman to marry you, how do I say it in Runyankore, I say "ija nkushwere?"😆😆😁!
I looked at this young man, then I said: 'wait a minute, the starting point is, DON'T KNEEL...'
But it was at that point something struck me; Can LANGUAGE exist without a Culture, without Customs, traditions? Isn't it Customs and traditions, actually Culture which assign meaning and context to the things we say, which we call LANGUAGE? So the INTRECONNECTEDNESS between CUSTOMS, TRADITIONS AND LANGUAGE mean one cannot exist independent of the other? So if the African is losing all the customs and traditions, how can he keep the LANGUAGE?
It all starts with CULTURAL RENAISSANCE,......or we are finished as a People!
