We have developed a new type of microscope for 3D tracking of individual fast moving molecules in living cells. The position of the molecule is “triangulated” at the microsecond timescale and the laser-beam follows the molecule using feedback implemented in hardware.
The trick for obtaining fast 3D tracking is not to move any mechanical parts but to switch the z-position using spatial light modulation and electro optical defection in 2D.

@BramVDBe Thanks! Heteroresistance generally refers to subpopulations with an increased MIC that is stable as long as the selective pressure is present (i.e. due to gene amplifications). This is not the case for our subpopulations.

We just published a paper about combining phenotypic Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing (AST) with in situ genotyping of individual bacteria. This makes it is possible to do rapid AST on samples with mixed species.
