🚨 THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF STEM OPT ABUSE WE SHOULD BE INVESTIGATING.

A STEM OPT worker says they were laid off and were running out of unemployment days.

So what did they do?

They say they found a small company willing to put them on an I-983 “so I could stay on STEM OPT.”

Except:

“I’m technically with them now, but there’s barely any actual work.”

They mostly get occasional tasks.

They admit it’s “probably a gray area at best.”

And then they say they’re still searching for a “real full-time job.”

If you’re calling the job you’re searching for the “real” job, what exactly is the job currently being used to maintain your immigration status?

STEM OPT isn’t supposed to be a placeholder that allows someone to remain in the country after losing their job.

It’s supposed to be practical training through qualifying employment.

If companies are signing I-983s for people who have “barely any actual work” simply so they can stop the unemployment clock and maintain status, that deserves serious scrutiny.

And the poster says something else we shouldn’t ignore:

“I’m definitely not the only person who ended up doing something like this.”

How many people are technically “employed” for immigration purposes while openly searching for what they themselves call a “real” job?

Many parents still don’t know this... you do not have to vaccinate your children to send them to public, private, or charter school.

In 46 states you can file a religious or personal belief exemption. It’s usually a 1-page form. Print it, sign it, turn it in. Schools are required by state law to accept it.

Only four states (California, New York, Connecticut, Maine) limit you to medical exemptions — and those are hard to get.

Schools will still put “immunizations required” signs up and pressure parents. That’s the script. It’s not the law.

In 2023, Ashley Furniture's CIO opened an offshore tech center in Chennai, India.

In February 2024, Staples hired him as CIO.

12 months later, he and Staples' CFO quietly incorporated "Staples India" in Chennai.

Then he hired the man who ran Ashley's center to run this one.

Then he leased space in the same building as Ashley's center. One floor down.

It opened last October with a 600 job target. No press release. No US coverage.

The CIO is Matt Johnson, Staples EVP and Chief Information Officer since February 2024. Before Staples he was EVP and CIO of Ashley Furniture, where the Chennai playbook came from, and SVP and CIO of Pier 1 before that. He and CFO Jeffrey Hall are the two US directors on the Staples India registry filing. He is the architect of the whole thing, and the "MJ" that anonymous employee posts blame for a mandate to move every IT job not tied to a building to India.

Staples India's own careers page: 89 open roles, almost all engineers.

They are literally hiring roles in India to replace American workers. A live Chennai, India job posting asks new hires to "reverse engineer" Staples' existing systems and "ensure knowledge transfer and continuity" from the people who run them today.

The rest of the list: Principal Architect AI, Lead AI/ML Engineer, Salesforce developers, Oracle EBS Finance, site reliability, security, and five product manager reqs covering Finance Tax and AP, Inventory and Order Platforms, Transactional Order Management, and Customer Account. Corporate finance systems and product ownership are moving too.

Staples' US careers page today: 13 corporate tech openings, 1 hands-on engineer.

One laid-off US engineer says his own job showed up on the India careers page the day HR put a meeting on his calendar.

Same building. Same leader. Same playbook. Another day, another exposed American company fucking over Americans.
