What a whirlwind the last two weeks have been. I got to play with @DerekAndSusan and @treyanastasio at @EricClapton 's @Crossroads2013 . I inducted my friend Paul Reed Smith of @prsguitars into @guitarcenter 's RockWalk. I celebrated @TheRealBuddyGuy 's 90th birthday with my extended musical family at @RadioCity . I announced @SphereVegas shows. I played a special one-off solo show in my home state of CT at @MoheganSun . I jammed with Dave Grohl for his @hopethemission charity event at Chaplin Recording Studio . And in one of the more thrilling opportunities I’ve ever been given, I backed up the legendary @Officialannielx along with my dear sweet friend Wendy Melvoin @WIGMusicRecords on “Sweet Dreams,” which I think is apropos given the wild ride I’ve just been on. I’m a lucky dude. More fun soon…

Introducing the @prsguitars Silver Sky @Defender Color Collection: core models in four classic vintage Land Rover Defender colors, limited to 500 each. Four SE models in contemporary colors will be available for a limited time. This has been a dream of mine going back many years, since picking up my ‘97 Arles Blue D90 and envisioning a guitar in that color. Partnering with @Defender to make it an even more vivid reality has been one of my favorite projects in a long time. Head to https://t.co/FBFB8pqUMJ for more.
I don't usually celebrate album anniversaries. I have a hard time perceiving the past. I like now, and what's to come. But this album, that turns 20 today, changed my life. I'd had success already, but everything clicked into place on this album. I met some of the greatest musicians and engineers in the world and learned so much about making records from them. When I think back on what made the album so special, some thoughts come to mind, and they're worth my remembering: Life came into the room. I rode bikes on the beach. I was goofy - most of the images from these years are of me doing something wacky. The record took time. Months of writing, giving up on lots of songs, writing new ones, moving studios, taking breaks. As I get older l tend to expect results faster. I get frustrated a little easier. But it's always been the same; you work weeks and months on songs. Some don't make it, but it's never a waste of time. You live more life, you write more songs, and the process starts again. You cherish the tight little list of tunes that matter. When just one joins the ranks, it's a blessing. Joy wins out over discouragement. You have fun with your friends, who are all on the journey of exploring the unknown with you. Great albums are built in layers. You have to become different versions of yourself to create a lasting body of work. Nobody cares how long it takes if the music is meaningful. If you want to make something truly special, you have to bring talented people in the room to contribute. Steve and Pino. Chad Franscoviak and Joe Furla engineering along with Don Smith and Dave O'Brien. Martin Pradler editing vocals. René Martinez handing me the guitar. Ricky Peterson on keys, @jamesbvalentine played some guitar on Stop This Train. Larry Goldings played B3 and @aliciakeys sang backgrounds on Gravity. Roy Hargrove played trumpet.
Charlie Hunter played on In Repair. @BenHarper played slide guitar on Belief. Willie Weeks played bass with Pino on I Don't Trust Myself With Loving You. The right music with the right people at the right time in my life. That's all you can ever hope for. And thank YOU, dear reader, for giving life to these songs. Onward...
Today marks a year since Dead and Company played our last of three shows in Golden Gate Park helping to celebrate 60 years of @GratefulDead . It would also become Bob Weir’s last appearance onstage. I wanted to take a moment to share with you just how incredible those concerts really were. Bobby’s insistence on standing on that stage in the midst of a complex health battle to perform nine hours of music over three nights was one of the greatest acts of heroism I will ever see in my lifetime. I watched him sidestep every traditional burden of entertainers - ego, superficial pride, vanity, to name a few - and sing his songs with pure heart and grit. He transcended his physical limitations by ignoring them. Bobby Weir, ever the contrarian, laid down his ultimate act of defiance; he was going to play these shows on his terms. He could have explained his situation in one online post, and the crowd would have lifted him like a giant wave up to glory. Fuck that. That wasn’t Bobby. Deal the cards. By the end of Sunday night, we’d created as many musical sparks as we ever had over a three night run. What he had to overcome in order to pull that off won’t ever be fully known to anyone. Some of the songs Bobby would play for the last time were shared with artists he loved and respected, @BillyStrings , #sturgillsimpson, #grahamelesh, @treyanastasio , and they’ve come to serve as a spiritual transfer. A blur between past, present and future. Like it’s always been. To use his own term, those three nights were the star in Bob Weir’s heavenly crown. The man you loved, whose music has given a more expansive inner life to us all, never backed down. In his final shows, after 60 years, he lived up to every measure of a person he’d ever stood for. It’s a master class of a life lesson, and I’ll take it with me forever.
