The person who “broke” this story (I use the term loosely because there were inexcusable errors by journalist standards), puffs his chest out on this app as if he’s the all-knowing journalism ethics grand master.

There’s irony in his hubris considering I’ve done this job in some capacity for nearly 20 years. It’s never a one-person decision when it comes to reporting on a complicated story. I spoke in confidence with 21 different people who I trust - colleagues, former editors, friends - about the journalism ethics pertaining to this story. I did that because my opinion on the matter isn’t enough.

I need to be challenged on my own opinions and be open to the idea that I may not have it entirely right. That’s journalism. Seeking truth but minimizing harm. I may not have thought about the story or the reporting of the story from every angle.

Ed Oliver showed up for the first day of training camp. I can’t imagine the strength that took one month after what happened. I can’t imagine a world where the need to report or be first comes before the need to be a human being.

There’s a code of ethics that journalists use as their guide. I’ve spent an hour in a classroom discussing complicated stories and what ultimately should be the right decision on how to handle that story and the reporting. Sometimes you don’t land on a clean and unified decision, but the process is integral to our profession.

I believe not reporting on Ed’s personal tragedy was the right decision. I’m proud to work on a beat with so many talented, thoughtful, and empathetic people. I respect and appreciate them.

McDermott probably had to go, I’ve been screaming for it for years. But he wasn’t the guy that said he fixed the defense in last year’s draft and rolled out the WR core the Bills had this year. Need a clean break from that coaching staff AND the front office.

Yet once he finally gets let go, so much of the reaction is that Brandon Beane was more responsible for how this #Bills season played out.

I'm sure McDermott had a say in player selection and drafting. And developing players that your given into Pro Bowlers is also part of coaching. That said... if you're firing McDermott, you have to fire Beane.
