In 2019, Zelensky campaigned - and won - on uniting the ethnically divided former Soviet Republic. He could have said no to NATO enlargement, he could have told Joe Biden and Boris Johnson: "I won’t sacrifice my country for your proxy war against Russia." But he chose not to.

Now, six years later, Ukraine’s military cemeteries are expanding, its territories are shrinking, and the man who campaigned on healing Ukraine’s bitter divisions is clinging to power at all costs - ruling over the wreckage of a nation he chose to betray.

According to a Ukrainian army database (in September), 1.6 million AFU soldiers are KIA, MIA or were wounded and now permanently disabled. This loss of life and infrastructure could easily have been avoided. Zelensky betrayed his country.
