Look, I mean this respectfully and peacefully. If you’re following Christ Jesus in a way that you truly believe is right, then do your thing and I love you.

However, a lot of people never stop to notice the difference Catholics make between worship of God and honor given to Mary and the saints. From outside the Church, kneeling, candles, statues, and “Holy Mary, pray for us” can look like worship, because for many people that is the ceiling of how they relate to God: words, posture, and feeling. Catholic worship of God is beyond that ceiling. It is sacrifice and Eucharist. It is God received, not only God addressed. Honor given to Mary and the saints sits under that, not in place of it. If your only category for reverence is “worship,” then of course Catholic honor of Mary will look like idolatry.

Since a mistrial is looking more and more likely in the Lindsay Clancy case, initially this thought pissed me off. After thinking about it, not so much.
