This week, I am commemorating Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey.

Hopkinson played a pivotal role in the founding of our nation and helped shape the principles upon which the United States was built. A patriot, lawyer, poet, musician, and artist, he also designed Continental currency, departmental seals, and elements in the Great Seal of the United States. Hopkinson was also an assemblyman for New Jersey’s Provincial Council. There is evidence that suggests that Hopkinson helped to design the American flag, however Congress turned down his petition for payment and claimed that others had also contributed to the design. His legacy continues to be honored across New Jersey, reflecting the lasting impact of his contributions to both our state and our country.
