Sam Neill had the kind of career most actors could only dream about.

IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. EVENT HORIZON. DEAD CALM. THE PIANO. Decades of great performances across nearly every kind of film.

But for an entire generation, he will always be Dr. Alan Grant.

I was 11 years old when JURASSIC PARK came out, and Grant led all of us through those gates.

He wasn’t some swaggering Indiana Jones-style action hero. He was intelligent, cautious and skeptical. Even when presented with the impossible, he didn’t immediately give himself over to the wonder of it.

He understood that something could be beautiful and dangerous at the same time.

And when everything went wrong, he became the adult Tim and Lex needed. In a strange way, he became that for every kid watching too. The man guiding us through the park, keeping us calm and hopefully getting us home alive.

Maybe it isn’t fair for one role to define such a long and storied career, but that’s what happens when you create a character that means that much to people.

I should probably watch JURASSIC PARK tonight, but that movie scared the hell out of my children, and I’m not quite ready to sit them down and traumatize them with it again.

So after they fall asleep, I’m pulling out the 4K copy of EVENT HORIZON I just bought during Prime Day.

Tonight, we’re going somewhere much worse than Isla Nublar.

Rest in peace, Sam Neill. Thank you for the adventure.

#WeaponsMovie was One of my most anticipated horrors of the year. chapter by chapter I was hooked, tensions were heightened, but the more I think back, that conclusion left a taste of disappointment in its wake. 7/10
