#OTD 12 years ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired reliever John Axford (Port Dover, Ont.) from Cleveland.

He struck out 12 batters in 11 innings in 13 relief appearances down the stretch for the Pirates in 2014.

#OTD Five years ago, the Toronto Blue Jays signed John Axford (Port Dover, Ont.).

It was his third tenure in the Blue Jays' organization.

He would post a 0.84 ERA in nine relief appearances for triple-A Buffalo before being sold to the Milwaukee Brewers.

⚾ Baseball Canada Cup Alumni Spotlight ⚾

Before making it big in Major League Baseball, John Axford was a member of Ontario's bronze medal squad at the 2000 Baseball Canada Cup in Melville, Sask.

What followed was a lengthy professional career for the Port Dover, Ont. product, including stops in St. Louis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Colorado, Oakland, Toronto and Los Angeles after originally being drafted by Cincinnati in 2005.

However, 'The Ax Man' is best known as the closer for the Milwaukee Brewers, where he built a streak of 49 consecutive saves spanning the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2011, he won the National League's Rolaids Relief Man Award after pitching to a 1.95 ERA and posting 46 saves, earning Cy Young Award and MVP votes in the process.

This August, the next generation of elite 17U Canadian ballplayers takes the field as the Baseball Canada Cup comes to Summerside.
