The sign was in Cyrillic above a green and rusty steel door at the end of a concrete hallway, windowless and narrow, lit by weak yellowy track lighting.
An old man in a white smock pushed a squeaky metal
trolley toward the entrance. He stopped and waited. In front of him was a young soldier wearing ear buds, searching through a heavily populated key ring.
Clinking keys accompanied the dampened blare of Iron Maiden’s Powerslave. The Russian trooper’s sweaty forehead bobbed to the music as he found the correct one. He shoved it into the lock.
The youth breathed through his mouth as they entered
the next hall, its stench horrific, punctuated by mutant wails of misery.
Metal doors lined one wall. The pair stopped at the first. Something heavy slammed into it as the youth looked through its peephole. His head jerked back. Deathly shrieking erupted as he unholstered his taser.
The senior male removed a burlap bag of meat and fruit from the trolley. He stooped over an iron shutter at the foot of the door. The soldier lifted it by a metal peg.
It slid up with a guillotine grind. A huge pink hand
darted out near his feet, grasping at air, its muscular fingers inhumanly long and powerful-looking. Lunging down, the trooper tasered the hand. It disappeared back inside.
The old man tossed in the bag and a plastic pail of
water. The youth closed the shutter. Continuing to the next cell, the hall overflowed with monstrous, hysterical howls.
