Από την πρώτη στιγμή είχαμε δεσμευθεί ότι δεν πρόκειται να αφήσουμε ανυπεράσπιστο το Μοναστήρι της Αγίας Αικατερίνης του Σινά. Το προηγούμενο διάστημα είχα καταθέσει γραπτή ερώτηση για το ζήτημα στην Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή, ενώ στη συνέχεια είχα ζητήσει τη διεξαγωγή κατεπείγουσας συζήτησης στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο.

Σήμερα, λίγες ημέρες πριν από την κρίσιμη εκδίκαση της υπόθεσης στις 23 Αυγούστου ενώπιον της αιγυπτιακής Δικαιοσύνης, μαζί με τους συναδέλφους ευρωβουλευτές του ΠΑΣΟΚ, καταθέσαμε νέα κοινή ερώτηση προς την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή.

Με αυτή καλούμε την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή να απαντήσει στα εξής:
1. Ελήφθησαν υπόψη οι παραπάνω εξελίξεις κατά την πρόσφατη απόφαση για τη συνέχιση της περαιτέρω χρηματοδοτικής στήριξης της χώρας;
2. Οι εξελίξεις αυτές συνάδουν με τις υποχρεώσεις της Αιγύπτου όσον αφορά τις θρησκευτικές ελευθερίες, την αποτελεσματική πρόσβαση στη δικαιοσύνη και την προστασία θρησκευτικών ιδρυμάτων;

Οποιαδήποτε εταιρική σχέση της Ε.Ε. προϋποθέτει σεβασμό των θεμελιωδών δικαιωμάτων, της θρησκευτικής ελευθερίας και της ευρωπαϊκής και συνάμα παγκόσμιας πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς.
