🚨 The expansion of the universe appears to be slowing down.
New research challenges a major idea in cosmology — and suggests we may be heading for a cosmic “Big Crunch.”
A bold new study is shaking up one of modern cosmology’s cornerstone ideas: that the universe is expanding faster and faster.
For over 25 years, scientists believed dark energy—a mysterious force—was causing this acceleration. But new research analyzing 300 galaxies suggests we may have misinterpreted the data that led to this conclusion. It turns out that Type Ia supernovae, long treated as “standard candles” for measuring cosmic distances, actually vary in brightness depending on the age of their progenitor stars. Once this bias is corrected, the evidence for a rapidly expanding universe significantly weakens.
This revelation supports previous clues from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which hinted that dark energy might not be constant but evolving—and possibly weakening.
If true, it could mean the universe’s expansion is already beginning to slow down, challenging decades of scientific consensus and raising the possibility of a future “Big Crunch,” where cosmic expansion reverses. While the findings are controversial and face pushback from parts of the scientific community, upcoming data from the Vera Rubin Observatory may help settle the debate. Either way, this study reopens fundamental questions about the fate of the universe.
