A THIRTEEN-year-old girl was bought for FIVE POUNDS.

The journalist who exposed it was the one they sent to prison. The men who sold her walked free.

His name was W.T. Stead. Editor of the Pall Mall Gazette.

In 1885, the age of consent in Britain was thirteen. A bill to raise it had failed in Parliament three times. Nobody cared enough to act.

Stead decided to prove how easy it was to buy a child. He arranged the purchase of a thirteen-year-old girl called Eliza Armstrong. Price: five pounds.

Then he published everything.

Four days of front-page exposés. "The Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon." The most shocking investigation Victorian journalism had ever seen.

W.H. Smith refused to sell the paper. So people bought it on the streets. Copies changed hands for twenty times the cover price.

The Salvation Army gathered 393,000 signatures. Ten thousand people besieged the office demanding more copies.

On 14 August 1885, Parliament raised the age of consent to sixteen.

Then they arrested Stead. Three months in prison. His crime: proving the system worked exactly as he said it did.

He wore his prison uniform on the anniversary every year for the rest of his life.

In 1912, he boarded a ship to New York. The Titanic. When it struck the iceberg, he gave away his lifejacket. His body was never recovered.

His memorial in Central Park reads: "Numbered amongst those who, dying nobly, enabled others to live."

This is what Britain is made of. And the world needs to know it.

The story this week about the English countryside being inherently racist and "too white" ought to be a turning point.
It made me think of a TV interview in 2007 I did with the then priest at St Clement's Church in Bradford, where I was baptised as a baby. I've written about this before, but it bears repeating.
The priest was born in Sindh Province, in Pakistan, the son of Christian missionaries. Consequently, he spoke good Urdu, better than many of his parishioners, who were predominantly of Pakistani heritage.
That meant he could understand the racist epithets hurled at him as he walked around his parish, especially if he was in the company of his black labrador.
Was the urban environment he lived in "inherently racist". Of course it was. Though not in the manner our government is prepared to investigate. Which is why DEFRA has just spent £100,000 of taxpayer's cash on a study arguing that rural England is "too white"; but would find inverting that question unconscionable.
Parts of our inner-cities are clearly unwelcoming to white Britons, but your cash will never fund a study to establish why that is and how it might change.

A footnote to my filming in St Clement's Church. The church had been firebombed the night after the USAF bombed Taliban targets in Afghanistan in 2001. No culprits were found.

Our State has some big questions to tackle. Foremost of which is why some UK nationals feel a greater sense of kinship with their co-religionists thousands of miles away than they do with their neighbours.
We might also want to ask why it was that the firebombing of my baptismal church was not reported by local media, perhaps because MSM finds it easier to ignore such uncomfortable facts on the ground. Just as they ignored the grooming scandals which went on, unreported and ignored in Bradford, for years.

I was born in Woking, Surrey, less than a mile from the site of the Shah Jahan mosque, the first built in Britain.
Growing up in Woking my friends and I soon learnt that the Pakistani community acted differently to us. They operated like a clan, like a gang. If you crossed one, you would find a dozen brothers and cousins waiting for you outside the school gates.
As English people who had small, quite independent families, this clan loyalty and mindset was nearly impossible to contend with.
'Turn the other cheek' my mother used to say. Never easy though when you've seen your friend have his teeth kicked in by a mob for a minor instance of perceived disrespect.
We used to play pool at the Planets in Woking town centre after school, however it wasn't long before this was taken over by the Pakistani clans from Maybury. They'd pelt us with pool balls and intimidate us to leave. It was their territory now.
