10 ways supermarkets could gamify shopping

1. Hide barcodes around the store. If a customer scans them all in one visit, they get a money off your shop. (the more of your shop the customer visits, the more stuff they’re likely to buy)

2. Body doubling (co-op) missions for people who hate shopping on their own.

3. Let people to guess the weight of the fruit they’re about to weigh - give them points depending how close they are

4. Allow shoppers to pick missions (set goals) before they start shopping (cheapest possible shop, quickest time, shortest distance travelled). Rank the missions and give points accordingly

5. When you pick up a self scanner, also grab a vest with a code on. Now every shop is a game of laser tag, see how many people you can get.

6. Give kids a treasure hunt of things to pick off their list (parents get the answers, so they’re in control)

7. Have different leaderboards at the tills (most items scanned today, fastest shop, largest amount saved)

8. Have achievements and badges that pop up on the till screen (Saturday shopper, Saved on every item, 69 clubcard streak)

9. Log and display weekly club card/Nectar card streak (maybe even have cards of different colours for different levels, like Amex, so folks can proudly display their streaks when shopping)

10. Upgrades and power ups — free coffee, a premium trolley (remote control, heated handle, music player), exclusive discounts, first dibs on the “reduce to clear” section…

10 ways to improve umbrellas

1. Sew a heated element in the fabric, so it dries without you having to shake it

2. A reading light, so you can read a map without grabbing your phone

3. Add an emergency/alarm button

4. LED lights in the canopy, so you can program team colours (or black for a funeral) (also doubles as a cool lightsaber when you pack it down)

5. Include a coffee holder, so you always have a free hand

6. Slightly magnetise the shaft and the umbrella rods, so it stores without you having to use the wrap around clippy thing

7. Pack confetti into the end tip that you can fire out in case you stumble onto a wedding

8. To stop poking people’s eyes out with the little tips as you walk, make the edges of the canopy convex, rather than concave, so the canopy bows "down" like a "U", rather than an "n" (does that make sense?)

9. Add a mini projector that can project maps on the inside of the umbrella for easy navigation

10. Have downloadable sound effects that sound when you hit the “open button” (definitely a light saber one)
