@adweak The statement, "Truth is stranger than fiction" just keeps getting recycled these days... agencies, sports, politics, global trade, HOAs, religion... you name it.
@adweak In response, they said,
"It was a paid pitch. We consider them a (former) client. And present them as we would any other client."
We quick ended this meeting. Thanked them. Said, we had seen and heard enough.
They were puzzled by the abrupt ending.
@adweak They, then, came clean.
They said this was work they had done for Coca-Cola for a pitch to which they were invited by Coca-Cola. They said they had not actually been hired by Coca-Cola. We pressed that they openly claim that Coca-Cola was a client on "that page in your deck"
@adweak Startup agency also (somehow) has 87 client logos on that logo page in the capes deck - despite only opening doors 3 weeks earlier. They also - somehow - have a global footprint with operations in 22 cities around the world.
@ABC ouch. I wonder who is left to fix this ๐ค๐คทโโ๏ธ
a) the remnants of an in-house creative organization that just announced they have eliminated; or
b) agencies who might have been asked to step in - but subject to that 360-day payment term that included in a prior RFP/pitch

And because the latter provides some kind of data, it becomes the priority. Sometimes even usurping or replacing longer-term or on-going brand-building investments and activities.
Urgency over importance. Symptomatic results now over building growth over time.
@blairenns Someone did not adequately follow the principles and frameworks for the qualifying conversation. Misread some early signals. And the engagement seems to have ended abruptly.

@tomfgoodwin First, they want to create friction - indicating that they do not want to make things easy for you.
They do want to do all of the things you cite - but want to start w/ higher pricing, lower monthly payments (& longer lease terms), & tariff-free pricing. THEN, be negotiable.
@tomfgoodwin Related (& under-rated)... a friend run a successful agency. Their teams - including himself - listen to every quarterly earnings call for their publicly-traded clients. They even summarize the calls for their client counterparts - highlighting key priorities, challenges, etc.

@StanLeeTweets This - & other similar @Nike ads - resonated profoundly with me as a young athlete. They inspired me. I felt like they were speaking directly to me. I often felt more challenged by my own competitive drive & desire to get better than those against whom I competed.
