How to use them correctly?
All three can mean “want” in English —
but they show different levels of intention and tone 👀
Let’s break it down simply 👇

💬 The core idea
想 (xiǎng) → feel like / would like (soft)
要 (yào) → want / will / going to (strong)
想要 (xiǎng yào) → would like to have (polite + clear)
📌 Think:
👉 想 = feeling
👉 要 = decision
👉 想要 = polite request
📖 Examples

1️⃣ 想 (xiǎng) — preference
Used when you’re expressing what you feel like doing.
🍜 我想吃面。
(Wǒ xiǎng chī miàn.)
→ I feel like eating noodles.
🎬 我想看电影。
(Wǒ xiǎng kàn diànyǐng.)
→ I’d like to watch a movie.
💡 Just a thought — not necessarily decided.
2️⃣ 要 (yào) — decision
Used when you’ve decided or something will happen.
🍜 我要吃面。
(Wǒ yào chī miàn.)
→ I’m going to eat noodles.
📅 我明天要上班。
(Wǒ míngtiān yào shàngbān.)
→ I have to / will work tomorrow.
💡 Stronger and more definite.
3️⃣ 想要 (xiǎng yào) — polite want
Used when you want something, especially in real-life situations like ordering.
☕ 我想要一杯咖啡。
(Wǒ xiǎng yào yì bēi kāfēi.)
→ I’d like a coffee.
🛍️ 我想要��个。
(Wǒ xiǎng yào zhège.)
→ I’d like this one.
💡 Polite and natural in daily conversation.
⚠️ Important nuance

Sometimes 要 can sound too direct if you’re talking to people.
🗣️ 我要咖啡。
→ Can sound a bit demanding 😅
👉 Better:
我想要一杯咖啡。
(Wǒ xiǎng yào yì bēi kāfēi.)
→ I’d like a coffee.

If you’re not sure which one to use:
👉 go with 想 to sound softer
👉 use 要 when it’s decided
