We spent a peaceful morning on the farm harvesting lush crates of mustard greens π₯¬. When harvesting non-heading cultivars, we treat them as cut-and-come-again greens by leaving enough inner leaves intact to encourage new growth and extend our season.
In an effort to not be outdone, our Sussex coworker also took a break from foraging Cardinal basil to pose for Niki's camera. Nutritionally-dense basil makes a great supplement to organic chicken feed, and its pest repellent qualities help keep our flock parasite free!
Sowing cowpea cover crop enriches our tree rows with nitrogen while providing protein-rich fodder for our animal coworkers. We leave the high climbing pods to mature and harvest as black eyed peas.

The Tete Noire cabbage our Nursery Manager germinated and transplanted, developed their outer leaves and are forming their inner heads! This quick-maturing French variety produces small, sweet, purple heads.

Our direct sowed Violaceo Di Verona cabbage grew its true leaves! Like most cabbage, this Italian heirloom prefers cool weather and moist soil. We love pairing its mature colorful leaves with white beans, carrots and sauteed leeks for veggie soup!
Our Apricot Lemonade cosmos are showing off their beautiful, soft colors! We have great success with Texas A&M bred cultivars and Apricot Lemonade is no exception!
Entries are officially open for the Johnny Appleseed Organic Invitational, an organic gardening challenge featuring 12 growers from across the United States, competing in six green-thumb inspiring categories!

Our cover crop beans enrich the soil with nitrogen and prevent erosion while providing fodder for our chickens. We direct sow a mix of varieties, but cowpea performs best in our hot, southern climate.

Mikael incorporated Italian oregano into her herbal kitchen planter design. Italian oregano's pest repelling qualities and low, wide spread make it a beneficial companion plant for the very front border!
African blue basil is an accidental hybrid variety parented by camphor basil and our favorite basil cultivar, Purple Opal! This variety is one of only a few existing perennial basil varieties, but is seedless and must be propagated through cuttings.

After Mikael builds her compost heap from browns, greens and manure, she saturates it with water (to about 50 percent) and lets it rest for four days. Hot composting requires an initial pile of at least one cubic meter.

Our Head Market Gardener, Mikael is excited to spend the day with exotic and endangered animals at White Oak Conservation. We collect White Oak's manure and turn into into nutrient-dense compost!
Our high-yielding Dragon's Tongue bush beans are almost ready to harvest! Dragon's Tongue is completely stringless and has a traditional, buttery wax bean flavor.
