Listen, I hate to be this guy, but I'm going to be. I spent 4 years getting a Bachelors and Masters degree in broadcasting and New Media Journalism, Valedictorian as an NMJ Master, and even I don't call myself a journalist.

Ethics is the first and last thing they teach us. Breaking a story about a death that's been confirmed by other media outlets is one thing, taking primary sources and running with it as if you're the first media outlet to hear about it is a complete breach of trust and privacy.

This is exactly what is wrong with the media landscape. First to press, first to break is always rewarded with high clicks. I get that this has been around since pen was put to paper, but this isn't about a random trade on a Tuesday night. You broke a story that should not have been broken BY YOU. Your FIRST COURSE of action was to defend your actions by verifying your sources AFTER the details about the accident went public.

Even if you did it BEFORE hand, you had absolutely POSITIVELY NO RIGHT to break this story unless your last name was Gaudreau and/or (because the family is in no doubt in contact with the organization) a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Respectfully, choose a different profession. This one should not be for you. There's journalistic negligence, and there's absolute reckless and irresponsible behavior.

Your first and last thoughts were of yourself. Not of Johnny, Matthew, not of their family, their friends, not even of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Just yourself. Re-evaluate your morals and your ethics, and become a better person, but choose a different field.
