There are footballers who win trophies, footballers who collect medals and footballers who leave behind incredible statistics. Then there are those precious few who become woven into the fabric of the game itself. Kevin Keegan achieved them all.

For Liverpool supporters, he arrived at precisely the right moment. Bill Shankly saw something others had overlooked, a young man without imposing stature but blessed with relentless energy, courage and an appetite to improve that never seemed to rest. He became the spark that helped ignite one of the greatest eras in Liverpool's history, setting standards that would define generations to come. He was our first genuine superstar, yet never seemed consumed by the idea of being one.

His decision to leave Anfield never diminished what he had already given. If anything, it enhanced his legacy. He ventured into Europe when very few English players dared, conquered Germany with Hamburg and claimed back-to-back Ballon d'Or awards, proving that British footballers could thrive on the biggest continental stage.

Newcastle embraced him as one of their own, first as a player, then as the manager who gave an entire city permission to dream again. England saw a captain and later a manager who never hid from responsibility, never retreated behind excuses and never disguised the depth of his passion for the game.

What stays with me today is not merely the catalogue of honours or the iconic images. It's the honesty. Kevin Keegan played and lived with his heart fully exposed. There was no pretence, no carefully crafted persona, only a man who believed football deserved everything he could give it.

Modern football often feels obsessed with perfection. Kevin Keegan reminded us that authenticity matters more. His story was built on endeavour, humility and an unshakeable belief that commitment could carry you to extraordinary places.

Football has lost one of its brightest lights. His legacy belongs to Liverpool, to Newcastle, to England and, ultimately, to everyone who fell in love with this wonderful game because of players like him.

Mo Salah is being called selfish and also caring about Liverpool with his “heavy metal” comments. It’s possible to be both, caring about himself and the club. One of Liverpool’s greatest ever players was making a legitimate point, and he has a right to. Salah could have delivered his critique to the hierarchy in private but he’s leaving, rightly so as the revered 33-year-old is not the force of old. He’s more string quartet than heavy metal.

By posting his critique to his 62m followers on Instagram, Salah wants everyone to know how he feels - and how he feels a club he’s served so well and loves so much can re-find its way. Of course, it’s embarrassing for Arne Slot, especially when so many of Salah’s team-mates "like" the post (whatever their reasons). It heaps more pressure on the head coach.

But the football overseen by Slot isn’t good enough at the moment. It lacks direction, intensity and authority. Salah is right. Slot has to focus most on ensuring Liverpool finish in the Champions League positions, rise above the criticism and give Salah the send-off a club legend deserves at Anfield on Sunday. #LFC

@IanDoyleSport I get your point (been a fan or 50 years, since a little kid) but you cannot seriously compare Slott to Paisley, plus the times are so different. There are serious problems and it whether Slott is really the man to sort them. He does himself no favours a lot of the time.
