The object is intense living, fulfillment; the great happiness in creation. People sometimes phrase about the joy of work. It is only in creative work that joy may be found.
10/10 WEATHER TECH •Google DeepMind’s WeatherNext Cyclones model won the 2026 Gizmodo Science Fair. A Nature evaluation says it adds about 24 hours of lead time on cyclone track, intensity, and wind structure versus prior top models. Open-source. Runs on modest hardware. •Researchers using IASI satellite measurements of heavy water isotopes showed that feeding those mid-troposphere vapor ratios into forecast models improves wind, temperature, and moisture fields out to five days — especially useful for heavy-rain forecasts. •A new generative model, UniGIO, trained on incomplete station observations rather than interpolated grids, posted double-digit gains in accuracy and extreme-event capture on the Weather-5K global station set. The pitch is farm-scale nowcasts where official grids are too coarse. •China’s CMA and Sugon said their Sugon 8000 cluster — about 100,000 domestic AI chips — is producing 10-day global forecasts at 5 km resolution, finer than the U.S. GFS’s ~13 km operational grid.

1/10 Weather update 29 September 2026
THAILAND •Bangkok is still a declared disaster zone after days of monsoon rain put streets under waist-deep water. Schools closed. Civil servants told to stay home. Tens of thousands in shelters. •Flooding has hit 29 provinces plus the capital: about 2.6 million people, more than 940,000 households, and 23 deaths since 16 September. Water was still rising in 14 provinces this morning.
ELSEWHERE •Southern France is under a Cévenol heavy-rain alert through 1 October. Catalonia flooded parts of the Barcelona metro over the weekend. •Paraguay, northern Argentina, and south-central Brazil are in a late-September heat spike, with 40–42°C readings in parts of Brazil. •Chile took a separate storm that produced floods and outages. Libya and southeastern Tunisia reported flash flooding from thunderstorms. •The UK is looking at its worst harvest on record after a summer drought — a different problem from the floods elsewhere, same season.
Bringing autonomy to the next fight: wildfires.
Anduril has earned first place in the Autonomous Wildfire Response Track within the @xprize competition.
Our solution manages the entire wildfire lifecycle with minimal human intervention. Lattice coordinates assets across air, land, and space to detect and respond faster.
The award reflects Anduril's deep experience building firefighting tech including more than two years of dedicated work with XPRIZE. During the rigorous finals test in the Alaskan wilderness, our platform autonomously detected, fought, and suppressed live fires.
Destructive wildfires are a global crisis. Anduril and XPRIZE are pioneering faster, more scalable and more automated ways to fight them.
BREAKING: Joe Lonsdale (@JTLonsdale) and Lior Susan are building a new prime for global resilience.
Prime Minute, the stealth startup backed by @8vc and @EclipseVentures is building around some of our most critical potential disasters, including wildfires, critical compute infrastructure, mass evacuation, earthquakes, and severe storms.
Wildfire appears to be Prime Minute’s most mature market, centered on an aerial attack solution. Public footage appears to show a helicopter-deployed effector releasing fire-suppression material onto a targeted area. NIFC reported 77,850 wildfires across the U.S. in 2025, with the Palisades and Eaton fires alone causing up to $164 billion in property and capital losses, according to UCLA. CAL FIRE itself has a $5.3B+ budget and is one of the primary agencies managing wildfire response across California.
Other solutions include effectors (hardware), C2 (command and control for missions), mission design, mission planning, mission intel, simulations, and resilience services, which Atoms Not Bits finds to be the most interesting.
Atoms Not Bits sees the larger opportunity as on-demand emergency response, bringing the best hard tech together with elite operators and emergency response crews ready to deploy.
Currently reading Disaster Robotics by Robin Murphy. It’s a really great overview of the field’s history, and how robotics have added value not just in response and recovery, but in prevention and preparedness too.
