"welfare" means the same now as it did in 1790:
1. The state or condition of doing or being well; well-being, prosperity, success; the health, happiness, and fortunes of a person or group. (OED).
Sounds progressive, without using any terms that raise flags like "socialism"

Michael Tomasky has written a great editorial in the NYT about words like ``freedom". I have a suggestion for him. Consider ``general welfare", as in the preamble to the Constitution. Democrats other than Bernie have been flailing around about what to call themselves. Why
