Renewable electricity does not produce: petrol, diesel, bunker fuel, or jet fuel; it does not produce the feed stock for ammonia used to make fertilisers, or feedstocks for chemicals, pharmaceuticals or plastics; it does not produce bitumen, carbon fibres, armaments or ammunition; it does not produce the industrial heat needed to make cement, glass, aluminium, ceramics or steel.
Claiming we shouldn't mine oil and gas in the UK because we won't be self sufficient is like suggesting we shouldn't produce any food because we won't be able to grow enough and would still need to import some.
Caroline Lucas is NOT right.
The Liberal Democrats are asking the government to restrict the use of highly toxic flea treatments for pets. Government has banned neonicotinoids for farmers, not for pet owers https://t.co/bW76BM2ZAi
Socialism: You have two cows. The state takes one.
Communism: You have two cows. The state takes both and gives you a ration of milk.
Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell one, buy a bull, and build a thriving herd.
Labour: You have two cows. The state takes both, drinks the milk, eats the cows, and leaves you the bill.
So I’ve read the Hansard account of the debate and have a few comments 🧵
Firstly, the 5bn over 2yrs @RachelReevesMP has allocated is not “the biggest budget for food production and nature recovery in UK history”.
In real terms it is the smallest

Unity ……. a rare thing in British farming but it’s the only hope we have of stopping what amounts to nothing less than an attempt at rural genocide by this government ☹️

A typical 200-acre arable farm owned by an individual with an expected annual profit of £27,300 could face an inheritance tax liability of £435,000, new modelling shows

Retailers & farmers don’t always agree, but the editorial in the latest edition of The Grocer, the retailers’ bible, on the scandal of the #FamilyFarmTax, is scathing of the government. When farmers & retailers are both saying you’ve got it wrong, it might be time to listen.
@farmfriendlincs And with the loss of BPS, extra fertiliser taxes, taxes on double cab pick ups it’s taking away the tools in which to pay IHT. This is a coordinated assault on the farming industry and not a particularly subtle one 🤬
I don't think I've ever known so much anger and seen such a sudden decline in optimism in our industry. But the most galling thing is being told "we support farmers" while kneeling us in the gots. Repeating a lie does not make it become true
Received an email this morning, asking me to go into the press supporting the APR reform. This unfortunately misunderstands my feelings on the subject - which I have been thinking about a lot over the weekend.
Here's a redacted copy of my reply to them.
The family farm tax must be overturned.
