Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng announced the permanent changes as part of the government's mini-budget. They come into effect straight away.
The price at which stamp duty is paid has been doubled from £125,000 to £250,000.
First time buyers will pay no stamp duty up to £425,000.
The Bank of England recently raised interest rates for a third time in three months to 0.75%.
This will affect a lot of people on variable rate mortgages and those whose fixed rates are due to end soon. Now is a good time to review these mortgages and secure a low rate.
