A new investigation by Important Stories reveals how full control over Telegram traffic is for 96% in the hands of Vladimir Vedeneev, an old friend of Durov with a history of cooperation with the FSB, and 4% in the hands of Roman Venediktov, a classic FSB officer.
This publication also highlights how this particular story fits into the history of Durov’s cooperation with the Kremlin — from VKontakte era and his correspondence with Surkov (exposed by Novaya Gazeta between 2011–2013), to recent revelations disproving Durov’s claim that he hadn't visited russia between 2014 and 2021 — he did, over 60 times, according to FSB border service leaks we covered with Kremlingram for Ukrainska Pravda website last year.
My sincere thanks to the russian journalists who did this work.
It's a bit disappointing that Ukrainian journalists didn’t have the time or resources to dig into this themselves. It’s also unfortunate that there wasn’t a grant program to support Kremlingram, which likely would have uncovered even more facts.
A reminder: in Ukraine, 75% of people use Telegram both for news consumption and personal messaging. This platform has more influence on public sentiment, the electoral process, and the long-term development trajectory of the country than any media outlet. With access to users’ messages, Telegram is a Trojan horse in the pockets of nearly every Ukrainian.
I would really like to hear the Ukrainian government’s response to this investigation. I believe both the public and media should demand comments and push for appropriate state decisions and policies — this is an existential issue.
I would also like to see a response from the governments of the other democratic countries, especially in the EU. We are being attacked and manipulated through platforms we don’t control — from Telegram and TikTok to X, Facebook, and Instagram. What are we going to do about it?
