@LewisJonathanE Do this: live as a religious minority for one month in Ireland, then live as a religious minority for one month anywhere across MENA and get back to me about how the experience differs.
This is totally dumb. Focus your efforts on places which actually need changing.
@miketoles@paraschopra The entire point of AI is that it's the last stop. It destroys 10,000 jobs for every one it creates, it removes humans from the equation entirely.
There is absolutely no alpha left in being an excel monkey better than anyone else
This was already the case before AI, but more true today than ever before
I am literally watching Claude in Excel build a forecast model better than 80% of analysts while I write this
The hours of work it would take to put together a coherent analysis can now be done in minutes with proper prompting and instructions
All the alpha in the investing world now sits outside of your desk. This includes talking to management teams, experts, former employees, competitors, trying the product itself, and so on
Fundamentally think that the job of an investor will slowly start to resemble that of a journalist
The real work will be done through conversations that an LLM cannot capture in the open web or inside of documents that everyone has access to
I think it's worth highlighting this poll again: Most of the public believe that Britain should continue to take in people "fleeing war-torn countries and persecution", but that the British state should unilaterally decide the numbers and the pace through "capped and controlled routes".
In other words, the median voter's position - actually about 64% of the public - is one that would require us to withdraw from the Refugee Convention 1951 entirely, since caps are strictly illegal under the Convention, and probably to leave the European Convention on Human Rights and scrap the Human Rights Act 1998 which translates the judgements of the former into domestic law and legal precedent.
So while it suggests that, for example, Restore Britain are notably to the right of the median voter, it means pretty much every party to the left of the Conservative Party are *well* to the left of the average voter.
I also strongly suspect that there's a lot of room for public sentiment to harden even further against the existing asylum system if the constant stream of shocking news stories keeps rolling in.
@danielthemate i.e. facing hostility from neighbours who have always been there is one thing, while facing hostility from people specifically brought in by the government against the will of the people, is another.
@danielthemate Understood, although keep in mind that this arson is in response to crimes committed by people who have no right to be in UK/Ireland were it not for our dumb laws.
Whereas, Arabs live around Israel anyway. So it's a slightly different situation.
I didn’t get an IB internship after applying normally.
Cold-LinkedIn msg’d banks for 4 months asking for an internship.
Finally got one at SocGen.
8 hrs in the office. Then 5–6 hrs at a restaurant to survive.
Did it all summer. That internship helped tremendously after uni.
Eastern Europe really spoils you as an EM investor. You dip your toes into other emerging markets and be like 'What do you mean I can't buy at 3x lower valuations than developed markets and at the same time expect local median IQ + local private sector speed to be on par with US & East Asia?'
EE & East Asia was poor because of man made reasons (communism and war). All other EMs are poor mostly because of genetics.
apple’s 1987 knowledge navigator film imagined a future where technology made us smarter, calmer, and more capable
almost 40 years later, their new homeview ad imagines technology helping a dysfunctional family get through breakfast and…use AI to check if french toast is actually french?
@maxtempers Do they have no introspection at all. Can we please partition ourselves away from this nonsense.
Genuinely, I do not see another long-term solution (apart from mass abundance from AGI).
@Saul_Sadka 2) and why are you spending time worrying about a European democracy. You have BIGGER FISH TO FRY.
Oh well, let’s forget about Iran, Iraq, Qatar, etc and get scared about a small European country.
Makes no sense. Try being a religious minority in Ireland vs in Iraq.
@Saul_Sadka 1) We have a €12.5 billion annual surplus, while Israel has a €28.5 billion deficit.
Higher PISA scores.
And more Nobel Prizes per capita.
We spend zero time comparing ourselves with Israel or other random places, but dumb takes must be corrected.
