Community Showcase: @tonative_org ✨
What happens when native speakers, researchers, engineers, and linguists come together to shape the future of African AI? You get Tonative.
From contributing African languages to global benchmarks like Global PIQA and XNLI, to building tools like VOLANG (a real-time speech-to-speech translation tool), they are ensuring African languages are represented accurately, authentically, and inclusively in modern AI systems.
Their community-driven approach puts native speakers at the centre of dataset validation and evaluation, creating AI that truly sounds like us. Beyond research, their contributions at NeurIPS, CHI, and the Deep Learning Indaba are advancing language technology across the continent.
Watch their community showcase to see how they are building sovereign AI for African languages and cultures.

My highlight @ Day1 of #DLI2025 was meeting my @ml_collective folks😌. We have achieved our feats working virtually, and it’s really beautiful to finally connect in-person.
Thanks to @DeepIndaba volunteers for making my onboarding smooth🙌🏾.
Btw, Kigali is a beautiful city 🇷🇼
6 days. Countless insights. Endless inspiration.
My highlights:
Breafast mentorship sessions,
LLMs & Attention Mechanisms by @SerranoAcademy + Quantum ML for Africa by #QML4Africa by #IBMQuantum team
Forever grateful for this brilliant community at @DeepIndaba
#urunana From the theme all the way to the 6 days of the event, Deep Learning Indaba was an inspiration not only to me but to many. Instilling in us the spirit of Ubuntu and encouraging research and innovations to strengthen Africa's AI for Africans by Africans.

We gathered in Kigali 🌍 for the 2025 Deep Learning Indaba. Nearly 3,000 applied, 1,294 joined in person, 400 virtually. 6 days of AI research, debate, teaching & learning. From 300 in 2017 → to a pan-African Baobab tree. 🌳 #DLI2025@DeepIndaba
Day 2 at #DLI2025 was packed with energy and ideas, from inspiring keynotes and hands-on tutorials to engaging panels and awards celebrating African research excellence.
Here are some of the moments that made today unforgettable.

A look back at the incredible learning from yesterday! Our attendees got to dive deep into some of the most exciting fields in AI through our parallel tutorial sessions.
A huge thank you to our expert presenters for sharing their knowledge:
@SerranoAcademy on the "celestial mechanics" of Attention Mechanisms in Large Language Models.
Dr. @ArnuPretorius on the intuition behind Policy Gradients for Reinforcement Learning.
@FarhaniYousra exploring the future of Quantum Computing.

A truly thought-provoking keynote at #DLI2025 by @verena_rieser !
Her talk, "Whose Gold?", challenged the idea of a single “gold standard” for AI alignment. It was a powerful call to action: moving beyond narrow safety metrics to embrace a pluralistic approach that accounts for our diverse, and sometimes conflicting, human values.
