Eva Marie Saint turns 102 today
North by Northwest (1959)
She’s the oldest living Oscar winner and one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Her scene with Cary Grant is still among the hottest ever filmed; every look, pause, and line lands. This is how it’s done
Lisa Nandy has quit X. Yes, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has decided that, rather than challenge so-called misinformation and disinformation, she would rather vacate the stage.
She has dubbed the platform a threat to democracy and free speech.
Since when has Lisa Nandy ever been a champion of free speech and democracy?
Does she care that more than 30 people a day are arrested for “offensive” social media posts? No.
Did she care when Keir Starmer and Steve Reed tried to cancel a string of local elections this year? No.
In fact, Nandy is the same Secretary of State who, only last week, announced plans in the House of Commons to force social media platforms to prioritise what the Government deems to be “trustworthy” news sources.
What should concern us all is her close relationship with our next Prime Minister, @andyburnham. Andy is keen to press ahead with what lhis and his ally Love Actually’s Hugh Grant’s planned assault on the free press.
If Nandy remains in post, she will be the minister responsible for bringing Britain’s free press under effective state control.
The Free Speech Union will be watching closely to see how committed Lisa Nandy really is to protecting free speech.

By banning asylum seekers from being housed near schools and nurseries, Labour has effectively admitted these unvetted foreign nationals pose a risk to British children.
So why aren't they being detained and deported?

JUST NOW: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is ready for dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding: “We are open, we are ready to meet. He is physically afraid to meet.”
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy’s departure from X has rightly raised eyebrows.
But, as @RobertJenrick has pointed out, there is something even more sinister going on. Just 10 days ago, Lisa Nandy told the House of Commons that the Government plans to force social media companies to promote what it deems to be “trustworthy” news providers.
The Government is trying to dictate what you see online.
This is beyond dystopian.
And now I’m here and I’m very angry. I mean fuming. Strand on the Green in Chiswick and the councillor Rick Rowe of Hounslow council has said that the pubs here; the Bell and Crown, The City Barge and The Bulls Head, aren’t allowed outside seating anymore. They’ve had that seating forever and people love to relax outside in the sunshine by the river, but now, the council has said that must stop. Hounslow council govern Chiswick. Hounslow is an absolute third world shithole. All the taxes from Chiswick pay for Hounslow to survive and these idiots want to make it even harder for businesses to survive. I have no say in these pubs and they certainly haven’t asked me to post, in case someone thinks that. I’m posting because I know how hard it is to run a business. I know how hard pubs work to survive and I know how terrible councillors are. Disgusting
Ed Miliband promised to cut energy bills by £300.
But under his watch they’re up by almost £300.
Now Andy Burnham could make him Chancellor. That would be a reward for failure.
