@j_mucunguzi He died 3 days before his nomination as a High Court Judge. Very painful. Btw, he taught at MUBS. Mentored many big names like Brian Musika. Late Chris Bakiza.
Thanks @j_mucunguzi for the heartfelt tribute to my dad
13th September 2024 marked 25 years since he passed. All the memories are truly touching. I cherish every recollection and look forward to hearing more.
I hope I can emulate his remarkable life so that his legacy lives on
Francis B Kabyesiza was a prominent Ugandan lawyer who hailed from my village, in Ryabirengye, Bukinda and whose persistent encouragement to young boys and girls in the village to use every opportunity at school to read hard and never to lose hope in spite of ones background, gave us the motivation to press on against all odds.
Kabyesiza was the first person to graduate as a Lawyer in my village, parish and perhaps my Bukinda Subcounty, if not even in the entire Rukiga District in the early 1980s.
Everyone in the village simply called him 'Looya'.
A down to earth man, whenever Kabyesiza came, especially during Christmas holidays, we always enjoyed simply standing in front of him after church service, staring him in the eyes, and wondering how a village boy from Ryabirengye could aim for the stars and become a Looya.
In church, he would be given a chance to greet the people after service--during which he would ask all those who were school going to stand up, before then speaking directly to us, sharing how he once was a small boy grazing cows and goats in Rwabahaya, Rweseturiro, Omukati, Rwabazaana, Kajugangoma and omunengo--all of them, stretches of hill off the main ranges of Mashure, the longest one stretch of hills that runs from Muhanga Trading Centre through Kahondo to Kikoba in Rwanda.
During Christmas Eve night angels, where the youth in the church moved from homestead to homestead singing carols and collecting money for the church ,Kabyesiza always gave us a lot of money, like clean 1000 notes, a lot money at the time, after the 1987 currency reform.
He often also would have brought tea maria biscuits, and soda or bushera and yellow bananas which he would give us to eat.
In 1993, when he came to the village, he told us that he was working with the Constitutional Commission, a body that was established to collect views from Ugandans to develop what later became the 1995 Constitution.
He took us through some of the proposals they had gathered, but we were too young to understand what they were all about.
I remember going to see him at his home in Rwabahaya during my senior four vacation in 1994, to just greet him and see him.
He welcomed and told me about the Constituency assembly of our representatives who were the discussing the proposals to make a Constitution. I had been an active youth leader during the campaigns for electing our CA delegate. Two powerful bulls from Rukiga-Jack Sabiiti and Manzi Tumubweinee hotly contested in that race, that was won by Hon Jack Sabiiti.
When I joined @Makerere university in 1996, Kabyesiza was one of the people that often attended and delivered talks to us under our umbrella association of students from Rukiga Country and Kabale District. He even often funded our freshers parties.
Kabyesiza was a great asset to Kigezi, also becoming the chancellor of @DioceseOfKigezi, the chief legal advisor.
When efforts to revive the East African Community were underway in 1998, Kabyesiza was one of the lawyers in the region tasked with drafting the Charter for the Community.
Through his Kabyesiza and Odere Advocates, Kabyesiza represented many clients and won many cases.
In many ways, my interactions with Kabyesiza about the Constitution interested me in the subject matter, opening a small jig for me with @UHRC_UGANDA Commission to conduct civic education among youth when I was a third year student of Mass Communication at Makerere University. We travelled to Western Uganda training youth leaders about their roles, rights and responsibilities.
As Head of Public Relations @UgandaEC today, I find that some of the experiences from the outreaches we undertook during the gig while at campus very helpful today.
Kabyesiza sadly died in 1999, at a time when we still needed him most. But he left us with a beautiful brilliant daughter Jojo Kabyesiza and a widow, Beth Kabyesiza, both of whom have continued to carry on his great legacy in their own ways.
