And the timing is almost perfect.

The original cost just $50 million and made roughly $177 million worldwide.

Kate Hudson played a magazine writer trying to get rid of a man in 10 days.

Matthew McConaughey played an ad executive who bet he could make her fall in love with him in the same amount of time.

A police officer in South Korea allegedly closed missing person cases by lying to the families.

Then investigators discovered he had handled 298 of them.

The case that exposed everything was Jang Mi ran, a 37 year-old woman who disappeared from Jeju in May.

Her boyfriend reported her missing.

The officer assigned to the case allegedly told him he'd contacted Jang, that she was safe, and that she didn't want her location shared.

Then he closed the case.

There was just one problem.

Police later found no record that he had ever contacted her.

And now Jang has been found dead.

Her body was discovered on August 24 just over 100 days after she disappeared in a wooded area near where she had been staying.

She was officially identified today.

Investigators are now reviewing all 298 missing person cases the officer handled.

And that's where this story gets terrifying.

Because what looked like one badly handled disappearance may have exposed something much bigger inside the system.

The officer wasn't just careless with one case.

He had 298 cases under his name.

Now investigators have to find out how many other families were told their loved ones were safe when nobody had actually checked.

A Jeju police officer was arrested today for deliberately shutting down missing-person cases — not one or two, but roughly 298 of them. He told families their loved ones were safe, then quietly deleted the cases from the missing-persons system.

The case cracked open because of Jang Mi-ran's disappearance, which turned out to expose a far larger cover-up.

Jang Mi-ran, 37, went missing on May 12.

Her boyfriend reported it, and the officer assigned to the case told him he'd reached her, that she was safe, and that she didn't want her location shared — then closed the file that same night. It later emerged there was no record police had ever actually contacted her.

Once the officer was identified and implicated, investigators went back through his past cases. Between August 22 and 24, they found four bodies of people who had been reported missing — Jang Mi-ran among them, found 104 days after she disappeared, just a few minutes' walk from where she'd been staying. The other three were men, two in their 60s and one in his 70s.

Since prosecutors' authority to conduct supplementary investigation was abolished, public anxiety has been mounting over how a single officer could kill hundreds of cases with almost no way for anyone to catch it.
