German armored trains relied on rail-adapted scout cars as their forward eyes to prevent catastrophic track ambushes.
Operating on the fixed rails of the Eastern Front, the Type BP 42 armored train carried a pair of Panzerspähwagen scout cars on specialized ramp wagons. These vehicles featured dual-mode wheels, allowing them to ride the tracks miles ahead of the main train to spot mines or broken rails. If enemy forces were detected, the scout car could swap to standard rubber tires, roll off the tracks to flank the target, and radio coordinates back to the train's heavy artillery cars.
