Planning an absolute banger fit for the second day of Rifle Rampage IPSC Norway Nationals, still can't believe @SonsOfLibertyGW is sponsoring a match in Norway , that's badass
US Marine from Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, stands in Fallujah, Iraq, on November 17, 2004, squarely in the thick of Operation Phantom Fury, the Second Battle of Fallujah.
The Darkhorse Battalion, 3/5, bore some of the heaviest fighting of the entire operation. By mid-November the battle had already stretched through nearly two weeks of the fiercest urban combat American troops had seen since Hue City in Vietnam. Kilo Company emerged as one of the most heavily decorated and hardest hit units of the fight.
Marines methodically cleared house after house in a city the insurgents had spent months transforming into a maze of fortified positions, booby trapped entrances, and interlocking kill zones. The images that came out of those days remain among the war’s most searing: exhausted Marines framed in doorways, streets choked with rubble and spent casings, men who had been awake and under fire for days on end.
The toll on 3/5 was severe. Kilo Company alone suffered a heavy share of the battalion’s dead and wounded, casualty rates that matched some of the bloodiest weeks of Vietnam compressed into a short, brutal span. That is why Fallujah occupies such a central place in Marine Corps memory of the war, not a single spectacular raid, but a relentless, room by room grind that demanded extraordinary resolve from ordinary infantrymen, day after day, until the city was finally secured.
One photograph from the heart of that struggle still stands as a quiet testament to exactly what those days required of the men who endured them.
