@politicalmath Two easy tips: 1) when bored and online, instead of social media subscribe to @TheBrowser and read a couple articles. 2) before bed put your phone away and force yourself to read a book. Do both of these every day for 30 days and you will rewire your brain and default habits.
America cannot long remain free, nor first among nations, if it becomes the kind of place where universities are dismantled because they don't align politically with the current head of the government.
Reporting a disappointing interaction with @westelm. We have this beautiful bench from them, and one leg recently broke. I want to replace the leg instead of buy a new bench. West Elm will not help me. https://t.co/p961gxC4pk
@westelm Hi, I bought it in the store in Seattle several years ago. I don’t have the receipt or order number anymore. I included a link to the bench in my tweet above. If you can source a replacement leg that would be great! DM me if so.
My family has spent thousands of dollars on furniture from @westelm over the past decade or so. I guess I’ll be looking elsewhere for furniture going forward.
When they told me they can’t provide a replacement, I also asked if they could just give me info about who makes the bench for them in the hopes of sourcing a replacement part myself. They refused to even entertain that and then rushed to hang up on me.
So you’re telling me we got the rest of the world to do the lowest value, lowest profit margin, most capital intensive, and most cyclical parts of economic activity.
And in exchange, they gave our companies the cheapest priced goods in the world to resell and thrive off of. Which then gave our companies the time to pursue the actual high value parts of economic activity (you know, like Silicon Valley, Wall Street, military R&D, etc).
And all we had to do was give them IOU’s for an imaginary currency unit that we would only ever pay them back in worthless real terms in, if we ever repaid them at all.
And… we were the ones that demanded this system come to an end?
@nic_carter 🤷🏼♂️ depends on your circle I think. I live in Seattle and basically everyone I know is pretty left. We all use a variety of AI tools in work and personal life. Lots of folks with thoughtful critiques or some caution, but everyone is using it anyway.
Just to summarize what’s happened in the last few weeks:
They concocted this whole thing based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the global economy. They think manufacturing jobs will come back (they won’t). They think free trade made us poor, when it actually made us rich. They think the current account deficit is unsustainable when it’s a rounding error in our aggregate net worth and also accretive to our net worth. They think being the reserve currency is bad when it’s a sign that everyone wants to do business with us. And they think poor foreigners were taking advantage of us when we’re the richest economy in human history.
And to "fix" all of these "problems" they implemented the one policy idea that almost every economist alive says is bad.
And then when they implemented that idea they misunderstood the math behind the rationale and came up with numbers that were irrationally huge. So they had to backpedal.
And when bond yields moved a tiny bit higher they panicked and "fixed" all of this by making the numbers slightly smaller, but they clearly hadn't done the math again because the numbers are still way bigger than any economist would ever recommend they be. Then they patted themselves on the back because of intraday moves in stocks while an economic hurricane continues to barrel towards us because they have no idea what they’re doing.
Amazing stuff.
MAGA’s “abundance” agenda: drill, baby drill, low tax on the wealthy, tariffs to make your ordinary goods more expensive, no healthcare, no social security, and endless crypto scams. I used to enjoy @nic_carter’s perspectives, but somewhere along the road he lost the plot.
Cheering at this @brhodes ending:
"If you don’t like what is happening to this country, you don’t need to wait for someone to come along and save it: You need each other. That should be the message that Democrats embrace, because most Americans don’t want to go where Donald Trump and Elon Musk are leading us.
The opposite of shame is pride. Let’s be proud of fighting back, of caring about one another, of committing to rebuild what is being destroyed. Because America is not just about the powerful becoming more powerful; at its best, it is about the underdog beating the longest of odds."
It cannot be reiterated enough how much universal healthcare unlinked from employment would reinvigorate American society and culture. New levels of dynamism would be achieved.
this whole “uh your abundance ideas are so obvious man, there must be a secret agenda” from people who have never so much as attended a single fucking hearing where 500 rich homeowners show up to scream that building a duplex would destroy their lives is so fucking irritating
