"Darknets" = overlay networks. Technical colloquialism coined in the 1970s by engineers to designate systems insulated from ARPANET. Revived in a 2000s paper on internet piracy by Microsoft employees and in a series of @wired articles that followed.

"Deep web" = collection of internet sites that are not indexed by traditional search engines. Everything from paywalled articles to organizational documents. I believe librarians developed the term but I'm not sure.
