@CoachMasters55 Love Coach Lad’s philosophy and style! With all the talk this week about accountability from “vocal” coaches like Izzo and Hurley, my response tends to be…can you get the same outcome from your players without screaming? And Coach Lad is who I’m thinking about when I say that.
Your life is a story.
Every story has a hero.
Every hero goes on a journey.
Every journey gives the hero an opportunity to make an impact on the world.
A few questions concerning this topic:
1. Have you ever seen a coach win a lot of games and still get fired?
2. Is it possible to win a lot of games and never be fired but be a transactional coach who doesn’t make a difference in their players’ lives?
3. Have you ever seen situations where kids don’t think they need to worry about character, discipline, and academics because they win all the time?
You will never be the coach you were created to be if you are trying to be the hero who proves your worth and value through the scoreboard.
You must be the guide who shows each of your players how to be the hero of their own story.
A few questions...respectfully
1. Are we talking about high school or college/professional sports?
2. If we are talking about high school, how do you "increase the level of talent" in a public high school?
3. Who decides what is the appropriate number of wins in a season for the level of talent on your team?
4. If winning is the main priority over impact, how do you draw the moral line of what you will do or not do in order to get the results on the scoreboard?
Competence breeds confidence…
But if you are trying to prove your competence through X’s and O’s and the tactics and strategies of your sport…
You will never find the confidence you truly need.

I wasn’t sad. I wasn’t angry. I was numb.
As I strolled to the back of the locker room, my eyes scanned the floor to ensure no shoes or jerseys were left behind. When I turned to leave, my gaze locked onto a poster on the wall.
“Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.”
The poster credited that quote to Christian Larson. But that’s not who was speaking to me that day.

3 Levels of Leadership in Coaching: Influence, Inspiration, and Impact
And all 3 have the potential to move your players in a positive or negative direction.
If you are trying to build a culture with your team simply as a tactic so you can win more games, it is a house of cards that will eventually fold on you.
I was at rock bottom. Any remaining confidence I had was slowly evaporating.
Then, something happened to stoke that ember into a small flame.

It's a fact of life that people judge us by our wins and losses. And if that’s how we measure competence, shouldn’t we focus on collecting those achievements to bolster our confidence?
