12 July 1691 – The Battle of Aughrim

On this day in 1691, the Battle of Aughrim was fought in County Galway during the Williamite War in Ireland.

One of the bloodiest battles ever fought in the British Isles, it saw British forces, defeat the Irish Jacobite army of King James II. The Jacobite commander, the Marquis de Saint-Ruhe, was killed during the fighting, and the Jacobite army collapsed in a disastrous rout.

An estimated 4,000–7,000 Jacobite soldiers were killed, making Aughrim one of the deadliest single-day battles in Irish history.

Although the Battle of the Boyne is better known today, many historians regard Aughrim as the battle that truly decided the Williamite War. With the Jacobite field army destroyed, organised resistance soon came to an end, leading to the Treaty of Limerick later that year.
