After the 40-year-old goalkeeper’s stunning Man of the Match performance (7 saves) in Cape Verde’s historic 0-0 draw vs Spain, his mother Ana Candida Évora couldn’t be there due to visa & bond costs.

Now the US State Department is actively reaching out to assist with her visa so she can watch her son live.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been urged to “do everything in his power” for her to attend Cape Verde’s next match.

On 9 June 2026, a U.S. official confirmed that Omar Artan, a referee from Somalia selected by FIFA for the World Cup, was denied entry to the United States. He would have been the first Somali to serve as a referee during the world's most prestigious sporting match. Instead, he was forced to return to Somalia under the pretext that he was "with some very bad people." Many people across Africa and worldwide understand the U.S.'s decision to be rooted in racism and imperialism.

Donald Trump has said that Somalis are "all crooks," referred to them as "garbage", and stated that "Somalia is not even a country. They don't have anything that resembles a country.” At the same time, the United States military has been intervening in Somalia since 2003 and has drone-bombed the country perpetually since 2007. During Donald Trump's first term, he bombed Somalia more than any other US president before or after him. During Trump's second term, he broke a record with at least 125 bombings in 2025, more than in any other prior year. If he does not view Somalia as a viable country, could 23 years of U.S. intervention have something to do with the country's current state?

Despite the cruelty and harsh judgment Omar Artan faced in the United States, he was embraced by cheering crowds of thousands. He was also embraced by the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. FIFA will pay him his promised salary for the World Cup games, but he has still been denied the opportunity he worked years to achieve.

Since 2022, Europeans have been leaving their countries in record numbers, citing everything from rising living costs, to overtaxation, to the antics of their politicians.

The West, which has and continues to sell itself to the rest of the world as the pinnacle of human civilization, seems to be currently experiencing a serious civilizational crisis.
