Quite.
I'd presumed post-election claims that, having "opened the books", the PM and ChX suddenly discovered a fiscal "black hole" was purely cynical.
This report suggests something more worrying about our new leaders. How could anyone with even a passing interest not be aware?
@anneapplebaum Lots of sarcastic or smug responses to you Anne on here along lines of ‘we knew this’ etc No-one ‘knows’ anything until brave journalists and others uncover and establish the facts. Some appreciation of what the FT have done here would be welcome.
@Chester8Rob@ChrisGiles_@BBCNews Actually Rob, The Economist is much quicker to admit mistakes (and actually says sorry). Beeb didn’t use to admit mistakes at all until recently, correcting things hoping no-one would notice. They still seem a bit resistant if Jess is right. Insecurity?
@tonyonthephone And what we choose to remember about the past, too, Tony. For more on this, please listen to my piece on Austria in last weeks FOOC https://t.co/10CkcFiG5p
@b4cktoreality@jonsopel BBC is the most trusted news broadcaster in the UK according to You Gov and the World Service is the most trusted news provider in the world. Along with the FT the Beeb is way ahead of the rest. It has its flaws but we should be very proud of it still.
@SeanFionn@Will___lloyd@Frances_Coppola@thetimes I didn’t read this as Beeb-bashing at all John. It’s criticising a style and mind-set that is all too common at the Beeb, admittedly , but much of British journalism has gone downhill in the way Will describes, including, he might agree, at the Times.
@MarkValencia Puccini seems to have had quite a cruel streak, if the plot-lines he chose are anything to go by. Suor is particularly bleak, I think. But what exactly is it you find triggering Mark?
@kimdeslandes3 hello Kim. I’d like to speak to you please about UCU (AUT more accurately) matters. It’s for a piece I’m doing on Cardiff Uni in the eighties. I can send my phone no if you can reply asap
@Rupechri enjoyed your piece on Wagner, Rupert. At least the old bugger can still stimulate beautifully argued, nuanced thinking and writing. All too rare these days.
@RichFenton @krishgm And it’s very funny to see people like Freddie Sayers suddenly recognising the iniquity of our electoral system. Trouble is, Labour isn’t now going to reform something they exploited so well. Same old story.
@Walesguy2@WelshLabour Thing is Mark, if it wasn’t Bell it was going to be Rob Stewart. Enough said. What is it about Welsh Labour that it brings forward a mediocre candidate like that? Something to ponder. Have a nice weekend anyway.
@Walesguy2@WelshLabour He was a SPAD of course. To Alistair Darling, one of the many political heavyweights that Scotland has produced recently. I don’t think parachuting in is done lightly. But we’ve always had a blend of local and outsiders. Who was MP for Merthyr in 1900?
