“If I don't burn, if you don't burn, if we don't burn, how will darkness become light"
"II will no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest but, compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.”"
These were the last words of 25-year-old Aaron Bushnell before he set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in the US.
What could make a young, sensitive and intelligent man like Aaron, resort to such a form of protest that ended his life so prematurely?
The Gaza Genocide is now in its fifth month with the active support of most Western regimes, the USA regime being the first and foremost among them.
Officially, the number of dead has reached 30 thousand, while some estimates raise it to 100 thousand.
For more than 140 days, babies and children, young and old, have been murdered every day.
Everything has been leveled, from schools and universities to hospitals and residential buildings by relentless bombing with no air defense system and no organized army to face the genocidal onslaught.
The area is completely besieged and blocked and there is no possibility of escape.
The trapped population is murdered in all possible ways. With bombs from warplanes, with drones, with snipers, with mass executions of prisoners, with artillery and finally more and more with hunger and diseases.
The Western media hides the reality of the genocide and presents all the outrageous lies of the Israeli regime that promote and justify the genocidal attack.
But despite censorship, misinformation and silence, the Gaza genocide remains the most well-documented genocide in history.
Thousands of videos depicting the reality of the genocide have been published in recent months before they could be taken down. Videos that surpass the worst horror movies. Dismembered children, people buried alive, flattened blocks of flats, decomposing corpses, executions of civilians who had raised white flags and so much more.
Those who have seen these videos and have an ounce of humanity cannot help but be shocked. This explains the censorship frenzy of the Western regimes so that these videos are not circulating more widely.
In Gaza, the crime of the century is being committed against a people who for many decades have been massacred, displaced, exiled, imprisoned, tortured and humiliated by an apartheid settler regime.
The Gaza Genocide exposed the true nature of Western regimes. Regimes that historically were based on the exact same methods and values that the Israeli regime now uses, to prevail globally. Genocide of native populations, violent colonialism, dehumanization of opponents, exploitation and enslavement. Methods and values that in the most hypocritical and two-faced way were presented as promoting democracy, freedom and individual rights.
The active support of most Western regimes in the Gaza Genocide has shown in the most indisputable way that they have not changed at all from their recent past.
For many well-intentioned yet naive people, this realization was shocking and traumatic.
Even more shocking and traumatic was experiencing this violent awakening to the true nature of the regimes they live in while the majority of their fellow human beings remained apathetic, cynical and manipulative as the Western system of power and propaganda can still shape them.
Aaron Bushnell comes from a subset of people of the west,
who experienced the double shocking and traumatic realization that they live in a regime that supports genocides and has at the same time managed to turn the majority of the people it rules within it into apathetic, cynical and manipulative monsters.
Being part of the US war machine but with a developed capacity for human consciousness and empathy, he felt unbearably complicit in the genocide. He decided in the most dramatic way to no longer be an accomplice as he himself said. But more than that, by ending his life in such a way, he wanted to wake up those who still behave as if the crime of the century is not happening and as if their country's active support for it, does not concern them.
With his act, he enters the pantheon of history with other people who did the same in similar cases including Vietnamese monks who set themselves on fire denouncing American imperialism and people like Kostas Georgakis who set himself on fire in 1970 in Italy denouncing the Greek military junta.
The self-sacrifice of such people is rare and indicates enormous reserves of historical consciousness, determination but also despair. It is as if these rare people have all the collective sensitivity and responsibility that the majority of people lack.
How much better it would be if some people were not driven to such self-sacrificing actions. But when huge crimes and injustices are committed like now in Gaza and the reaction to them is not at all up to the circumstances, the gap between the crime and the reaction against it, creates some rare people who react in such a way.
What could such a protest bring to the western world mired in fascism?
For the US, this is not even the first such protest. It was preceded by the self-immolation of a woman 3 months ago who had gone relatively unnoticed and was buried by the western media.
This time they can't bury it so easily as there is the video of the act and Aaron was a US soldier.
They will write as they already do, that he had psychological problems and that he was a victim of the woke ideology. They will discredit and degrade such an act of historic self-sacrifice in any way possible.
But the truth will not be distorted or hidden.
Aaron had no psychological problems and was not a victim of any ideology.
He put Nazim Hikmet's lyrics into practice: "If I don't burn, if you don't burn, if we don't burn, how will the darkness shine?" The air is thick as the earth, the air is heavy as a pencil. I shout, shout, shout. Come quickly, I'm calling you to melt the pencil"
May his screams of "Freedom in Palestine" while he was burning alive, wake us all up.
May his sacrifice not be in vain.
Stop the Gaza Genocide!
Free Palestine!
