Effective leaders like assertive teachers and help focus on developing their strengths and confidence. Ineffective leaders don't like assertive teachers and focuses on their weaknesses to keep their confidence low. Be the effective leader.
Did you know adults are more engaged and effective when they feel valued and their strengths are focused on. I guess adults also work harder for those they trust and know care for them.
The #1 priority of admin should be staff morale.
Everything else is secondary. Here's a few tips:
* give them a voice
* Trust them as professionals
* Treat everyone as individuals/ humans
* Respect their time
* Show them you care personal/professional
* celebrate/ appreciate
How you treat people says everything there is to say about you. It doesnโt matter how smart, accomplished, wealthy or cool you think you are. Strength of character is beyond any measure. Being a good person with a kind heart is what matters most & will benefit you for a lifetime!
According to Education Week survey, since pandemic, 87% of teachers say that teaching is more stressful. Before pandemic, 13% said they were very likely to leave teaching within 2 years, since covid, 33% said they are very likely to leave. We have to start taking care of teachers
Teachers rarely quit because of students. And they may give different reasons why they leave, but its almost always leadership and/or unrealistic work load.
The teacher shortages being reported around the country are staggering. If there has ever been a time for school boards, districts, and administrators to take care of teachers and staff, it is NOW. Remember, Morale reflects leadership.
Addressing the teacher shortage shouldn't involve lowering criteria to be a teacher--it should involve supporting teachers, paying them, and providing the resources needed to best serve students.
