The Santa Monica Police Department is aware of community concerns regarding a federal immigration arrest that occurred outside the Santa Monica Public Safety Facility.
Earlier this morning, SMPD officers arrested an adult male on suspicion of vehicle burglary and possession of burglary tools. He was processed, cited on those charges, and released from SMPD custody.
After his release was complete, federal authorities independently took the individual into custody. SMPD officers did not participate in or assist with the federal arrest. There was no coordinated handoff between SMPD and federal authorities.
SMPD does not participate in civil immigration enforcement operations or arrest individuals based solely on their immigration status. At the same time, the Department does not obstruct lawful actions conducted independently by federal authorities.
This position is consistent with SMPD’s longstanding policy and remains unchanged. As Chief Darrick Jacob reaffirmed in his prior statement on immigration enforcement, SMPD’s responsibility is to protect public safety and enforce criminal laws within Santa Monica. Civil immigration enforcement is the responsibility of designated federal agencies and is not a function of the Santa Monica Police Department.
Our officers remain focused on local public safety, the prevention and investigation of crime, and the protection of everyone who lives, works, and visits Santa Monica. Immigration status does not affect a person’s ability to report a crime, request assistance, or cooperate with SMPD as a victim or witness.
Community trust is essential to effective policing. SMPD remains committed to serving every person with professionalism, fairness, dignity, and respect.
For additional information regarding SMPD’s longstanding policy concerning Federal Immigration activity, please read Chief Darrick Jacob’s prior community message:

@MrWinMarshall He obviously screwed up but you guys have to look in the mirror. Look at how hard the Argies fight. Look at them singing their national anthem together. They will do anything to win. England are not on the same level and it's part of a larger issue.
Thank you Venice Family Clinic (Mitesh Popat, CEO) and LA Community Health Project (Amanda Cowan, Executive Director)! Santa Monica's 7 Councilmembers, City Manager, and LA Mayoral candidates Karen Bass and Nithya Ramen finance drug addiction and homelessness. And special thanks to LA DSA Councilmembers Eunisses Hernandez, Hugo Soto-Martinez, and Ysabel Jurado (who told students at Cal State LA, "F_ _ k the Police."). They endorse the drug pipe handouts.
Only losers wear @meta glasses. And we do not consent to being recorded by losers.
Also, this is your big campaign? Some @KylieJenner influencer doing boring shit around the house? LOFL.
Lastly, fuck your surveillance. #MetaGlassesViolator
