Bernie Sanders has declared that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza, becoming the first US senator to use the term.

“Over the last two years, Israel has not simply defended itself against Hamas,” Sanders wrote in an op-ed on his website on Wednesday. “Instead, it has waged an all-out war against the entire Palestinian people."

“Many legal experts have now concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.”

Sanders has historically refused to use the word genocide when describing Israel’s actions in Gaza. In an interview with Novara Media in 2024, he refused three times to use the term, even saying he felt “nervous” about boycotts of Israel.

Sanders is not the only politician to change position recently: mayor of London Sadiq Khan made a similar announcement later the same day. Countries including the UK, France and Canada are also set to recognise Palestinian statehood at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.

“The very term genocide is a reminder of what can happen if we fail,” Sanders wrote. “That word emerged from the Holocaust - the murder of six million Jews - one of the darkest chapters in human history.

“Make no mistake. If there is no accountability for Netanyahu and his fellow war criminals, other demagogues will do the same. History demands that the world act with one voice to say: enough is enough. No more genocide.”
