#CoSP11: The UN Convention against Corruption conference wrapped up last Friday in Doha, and there's a big update. Here’s a brief recap. ⬇️
First of all, the good news. 🎉 Countries have adopted a resolution that sets minimum standards for political finance transparency. This is the first time this has happened since the convention - the only global anti-corruption treaty - entered into force 20 years ago.
This is something Transparency International has long advocated for: that people have a right to know who pays for the politicians who ask for their vote, and that practical safeguards are needed to stop money quietly buying access, influence or power.
Credit is due to Norway, Albania, Ghana and Mongolia for putting political finance on the global anti-corruption agenda at the conference.
Progress elsewhere was more limited. Governments made some advances on the role of professional service providers, calling for stronger internal controls and oversight to prevent their services being misused for corruption. Momentum is growing, but a dedicated resolution is still needed.
Transparency International's experts were also tracking two other important resolutions: one linked to crimes that affect the environment, and another on Small Island Developing States that included a call to strengthen the governance of climate finance. Both recognise the need for greater transparency, accountability and integrity as climate finance and conservation efforts scale up.
After difficult negotiations, States Parties also agreed on the future of the Implementation Review Mechanism, preserving the peer review system that underpins accountability under the convention and strengthening its transparency.
Last week’s negotiations show that progress against corruption is possible when sustained advocacy meets political will. ❓ The question now is: Will these commitments be implemented into actionable national rules, or remain just words on paper? We hope the first.

Today, the Permanent Missions of Albania, Ghana, Mongolia & Norway launched at @UN_Vienna a joint draft resolution for the 11th UNCAC Conference of States Parties: “Enhancing transparency in the funding of political parties, candidatures for elected public office, and electoral campaigns”.
This first-ever #UNCAC resolution on political finance aims to strengthen democratic integrity, public trust, and accountability by promoting transparent and fair systems of political funding.
The draft calls for independent oversight bodies, clear reporting and disclosure standards, transparent public funding, limits on foreign and excessive donations, and the active engagement of civil society and the media.
