Historian of social mvts, unions & poli parties. @gbcollege professor. @broadbent Fellow. @wilsoncndnhist Associate. Socialist. Feminist. Pacifist. Organizer.
I don’t post much on here anymore, for obvious reasons, but I thought I’d post this little talk on fascism that I prepared for the @broadbent Institute last fall. I’m glad it’s finally gone up, I’m less glad to be proven right about the new fascism.

Nice piece by @ES_Wickham from @TheHoserMedia talking about grocery prices and May Loblaws boycott. Was happy to have had the opportunity to chat with him about this issue and pleased to have been featured. https://t.co/8revLzPIhn
Really fortunate that I was able to join fellow social democrats in celebrating Ed Broadbent’s life last week. For those interested in supporting the work Ed was doing please consider contributing to the Ed Broadbent Democracy Fund.

This is a problem across the entire Ontario college sector.
The reliance on (and exploitation of) precariously-employed contract faculty is detrimental to students, faculty, and the system as a whole.
Time for a responsible, ethical academic staffing model!

Important @ActiveHist article by Alvin Finkel about Canadian post war immigration policies that allowed for the immigration of large numbers of Nazis and Nazi collaborators.

I don’t watch a ton of NHL hockey anymore, but this new direction means that I’ll be actively boycotting and intentionally not engaging with NHL hockey at all. Also, I’m pretty sure this infringes on charter rights in Canada.
“For Ontario teachers, arbitration is no substitute for the right to strike” great article by @Prof_Savage and @stephross_mac on how problematic the OSSTF deal with the Ford government is. https://t.co/9XsVcIhYRN @ConversationCA
Take a look at the left-hand pair of columns. I would have to do some digging, but I am pretty sure that the implication here is that students from India put more into the Ontario college system than does Queen's Park.
Proud to be a member of @MuddyYorkRFC, especially so because of our involvement in efforts like mixed ability rugby that expand participation and inclusion in sport. Thanks also to the continuing leadership from @RugbyOntario and @AbilitiesCentre. https://t.co/dNa1om7g8A
This is a really important link to two @propublica articles by @JenBerryHawes on the need to move histories of enslavement, enslaved people, and their enslavers in Charleston to the forefront, in the face of continuing efforts to deny the truth of these histories.
🧵When I moved to Charleston 25 years ago, historic sites called enslaved people “servants.” They were largely ignored in the broad shadow of Confederate monuments.
Beyond the Civil War, it was hard to learn much about the city’s legacy of slavery at all.
The Anglican Diocese of Toronto has made a powerful statement calling on all levels of government to work together to provide shelter to asylum seekers and expedite 2,000 rent supplements, and for the federal government to honour its $97 million financial commitment to refugees.
Thanks to @JennJefferys for this important article on toxic masculinity and renewed violent attacks against women, against the LGBTQ+ community, and against members of radicalized and Indigenous communities. https://t.co/sJBnBXgifp
Robinson Huron Treaty Chiefs and dignitaries announce $10 Billion in compensation is for 21 First Nations. There is not yet a settlement for per capita payments to individuals.
Duke Peltier said “It is our people who have been carrying the burden of treaty for far too long.”
Great interview by @calebzakarin of Cathal J. Nolan on the @NewBooksNetwork on his new book from @OUPHistory, Mercy: Humanity in War. The book sounds amazing, but Nolan's fiery and passionate opposition to war made the interview itself worthwhile. https://t.co/RAXpCcTnBI
Excellent Canadaland episode talking about trans rights and the resurgence of fascism. Well done @goldsbie and @CheriDiNovo. Please bring Cheri back, she’s a great guest.
Navigating David Johnston’s resignation. (see what we did there? *nudge* *nudge*)
And, oh crap, the far right is fixated on queer people again.
@CheriDiNovo co-hosts.
