I caught myself rewriting my student's entire introduction last year.
Again.
For the third time that month.
That's when it hit me:
The skills that made me productive are now making me a bottleneck.
Here's the mid-career trap nobody warns you about:
We are hiring! We are looking for a PhD student to develop novel AI/ML applications to automate characterisation and quantification of NMR-based assays. Please find the full project description here: https://t.co/MUBmTaC9K5.
Non-GMO Salt.
Utter nonsense.
The idea of "non-GMO salt" is fundamentally flawed and reveals a misunderstanding of what GMOs (genetically modified organisms) actually are.
To clarify, GMOs refer to living organisms - plants, animals, or microbes - whose genetic material has been intentionally modified.
Salt, however, is not an organism. It’s an inorganic compound, primarily sodium chloride (NaCl), with no DNA or genetic material to modify.
For something to be genetically modified, it must have genes. This is why GMO applies to living things like crops or bacteria, but not to non-living, inorganic substances like salt.
Labeling salt as "non-GMO" is scientifically meaningless. It’s a marketing gimmick designed to exploit consumer fears about GMOs, even though GMOs have no relevance to a substance like salt.
These labels don’t inform—they mislead, creating unnecessary confusion and fostering misconceptions about basic science. Far from protecting consumers, they undermine scientific literacy and fuel mistrust in legitimate food labeling practices.
After 7 fantastic years at Warwick, I am excited to announce that I will be moving to @unibirmingham in early 2025! So excited to be working with so many talented researchers in women’s health!
The shortest amount of time it's taken a country to join the EU, is 3 years!
We can beat that record. We just have to apply first to get the ball rolling.
The politicians need YOU to TELL them to apply! So sign the petition...

Today, 35 years ago on 9 November 1989, the Berlin Wall fell—a pivotal event without which I and millions of others would not have had the chance to freely pursue their life goals. A timely reminder that freedom should never be taken for granted.
Reminder that science is political whether you like it or not.
Politics define how we are funded and what we are funded for. Politics define what we are able to study. Politics define who will be allowed in our labs and workplaces. Politics define with whom we can collaborate.
