We were delighted you were able to join us to deliver the inaugural address. It was a fitting tribute to David’s Legacy and I think there’s some positive times ahead for pupils with SEN.
It was an honour to give the inaugural David Galloway Annual Education Lecture at the University of Durham School of Education & to meet members of Professor Galloway’s family today.
My lecture was on reform of the SEND system and the Education Select Committee’s recent report.
New open-access paper. A structured review of ethnic match between teacher and students. Unlike our findings for discipline, aspiration, selection etc. there is no good evidence of an impact on attainment.

This confirms our secondary analysis of School Workforce census linked to the National Pupil Database in England. On average, having a teacher of the same ethnicity does not affect attainment. But can be linked to how students are treated more widely.

“Fair-skinned, young and slim白幼瘦” or “Kardashian-style”? In my latest paper in @FemMediaStudies, I explore how female Chinese students in the UK present themselves on dating apps. Grateful for the feedback from my supervisors @CoraLinglingXu@DrAnnaLlewellyn@DUSofE
New preliminary report (very tentative so far) on the link between household income and attainment at school. Income data not a panacea as yet, but full of promise. Some support for findings that poverty attainment is declining somewhat. Watch this space.

Instead of listing my publications, as the year draws to an end, I want to put pressure on the commonplace assumption that productivity must always increase. Good research is disruptive and thinking time is central to high quality scholarship and necessary for disruptive research
Dominique Pelicot, French man who drugged+raped his wife, brought men from the internet to rape her, filmed the rapes, plus drugged, raped, photographed his unconscious daughter, was found guilty.
This is the rapist. Show him. Stop using his wife’s picture to report his crimes.
The 'duty to explain' is a more a positive way of understanding that the university teacher should not indoctrinate the student but instead open up a range of interpretations for them to choose from. See my new paper with Ivy Xiao Han in open access: https://t.co/sIbRZGwren
