Harrison Barnes has spent 14 years in the NBA as a role player.

Steady. Reliable. Never a superstar, never a max contract headline. The kind of guy who shows up, does his job, and sticks around forever because every team needs him.

Turns out that's exactly how he runs a bank too.

Barnes just became chairman of Barnes Bancorp after buying Community State Bank, located in Paton, Iowa. Population, roughly 250 people.

He put $25 million of his own money into it.

This isn't some retired athlete dabbling in a passion project either. Barnes grew up 40 minutes away in Ames, Iowa, and has been building toward this for years.

He joined the board of First National Bank in Ames back in 2020, the same bank his family had used for two decades. He later joined the board of Triumph Bancorp too. By the time this deal came together, he'd already spent half a decade learning the actual business from the inside.

"I saw community banks act as economic first responders during Covid," Barnes said. "They proved to be the most effective way to distribute PPP loans and proved their value to their customers and communities."

For the new bank, Barnes assembled a board with a combined 200 plus years of Iowa banking experience. Not one splashy hire. A room full of people who've actually done this work their whole careers.

His philosophy for running it sounds almost boring on purpose.

"Slow growth is durable growth."

Nothing about the bank itself is changing day to day. The name stays Community State Bank. Every employee keeps their job. The current CEO stays in place. The only thing that's different is who owns it.

Here's the connection Barnes makes between the two parts of his life that actually holds up.

Fourteen years in NBA locker rooms taught him something about stability that translates directly to banking. Good teams aren't built on one guy doing everything spectacular. They're built on continuity, trust, and everybody understanding their role.

A community bank in a town of 250 people runs on the exact same principle. No flash. Just show up every day and do right by the people who depend on you.

Barnes still plays in the NBA. He's now also the chairman of a bank in a town smaller than most high school graduating classes.

Two very different jobs. Somehow the same skill set.
