Truly thrilled to be joining and learning from such an amazing team of editors and newsroom leaders who help define what the @nytimes stands for every day and for the future. Thanks to @cliffordlevy, Susan Wessling and Phil Corbett for the opportunity.

My girlfriend: “so what happens if nobody scores after 9 innings?” I tell her they play extra innings until one team wins. “Oh my god that’s awful.” Hard to argue.
After 3 years, the last year and a half as the pandemic/health care editor, today is my last day on Metro. A huge thanks to everyone involved in our coverage, and to the readers.
I have a week remaining as Metro's pandemic editor, and it has taken every bit of strength during this run not to correct everyone every time it's reported that someone has tested positive for Covid-19. A person tests positive for the virus, and then may end up getting Covid-19.
Police unions plan to fight vaccine-or-test mandate. The guidelines were sent to NYPD employees earlier this week in an internal memo. Sources say it caught many officers by surprise. https://t.co/5OdawHIlnP
NYC 7-day average of new virus cases per day is down to 1,703 from a recent high of 1,967 on 8/19. New hospitalizations 7-day average down to 58 per day from a recent high of 112 on 8/16. There's been a decrease in pretty much every single metric.
It's pretty remarkable that the controversial return of sports and sports leagues during the pandemic may lead to a greater understanding of the virus and variants. Players didn't sign up to be guinea pigs, but they've become that.

It falls short of a vaccine mandate, but it's de Blasio’s first move to require any city employee to show proof of vaccination or a recent negative coronavirus test as a condition of showing up to work.

For the first time since last summer, no NYC ZIP code has a positive test rate above 3 percent, according to the latest update. No ZIP code had more then 55 new cases in the latest seven-day period. Every borough is under 2 percent.
Only 2 NYC ZIP codes have a positive test rate above 3 percent in the latest stats update. Highest is 3.17. It's likely that every ZIP code will be under 3 by the end of the weekend. Every borough is under 2 percent.
@jon_greenberg It's amazing. The team with the guy who swung was disrespecting the game, not the team that put a 300 pound catcher on the mound to throw 49 mph meatballs.
In the last several months, several major news orgs — including the LA Times, Washington Post, Reuters, ABC/CBS news — hired new leaders. None were Latino. Newsroom leaders should know there's mounting frustration among Latino journos about the lack of representation.
No NYC ZIP code registered a positive test rate above 5 percent in the latest stats update. Two are above 4 (Queens Village ZIP code is highest at 4.11). All but 16 ZIP codes are under 3. No ZIP code recorded more than 90 cases in a 7-day period.
