Reuters vandaag: EU reserveert 2/3 van het satellietspectrum voor zichzelf. Want Musk mag niet te groot worden.

1/ Weet je wat grappig is? Terwijl Musk 10.000 satellieten in de lucht hangt en mensen in de meest afgelegen hoeken van de planeet internet geeft, zit Brussel te beslissen hoeveel "spectrum" hij in Europa mag gebruiken. Antwoord: één derde. De rest is voor ons.

2/ "Ons" is IRIS². Het Europese antwoord op Starlink. 290 satellieten. Eerste lancering 2029. Als alles meezit. Starlink draait vandaag op meer dan 10.000. Maar het spectrum is alvast gereserveerd. Voor satellieten die er nog niet zijn.

3/ Er was trouwens iemand in de Commissie die wou dat Musk helemaal niks kreeg. Nul procent. Volledig Europees spectrum. Dat vonden ze toch wat te ver gaan. Niet omdat het belachelijk was. Gewoon politiek te gevoelig.

4/ Mensen in de Ardennen, op de Veluwe, in de Alpen — die wachten al jaren op fatsoenlijk internet. Maar eerst even soevereiniteit regelen. Eerst de flesdopjes. Dan misschien bereik.

5/ Musk bouwt dingen. Brussel beheert dingen die anderen bouwen. Dat is het verschil. En dat spectrum gaat dat verschil niet kleiner maken.
