Do not fail the Cuban people by buying into the regime’s propaganda.
Thank you, @USAmbUN.
We Cubans know that the only way to overcome this crisis is to end the dictatorship.
Raul Castro had four men killed over open water. Today Florida charged him with murder. Thirty years is too long to wait for justice. It is never too late to deliver it. Thank you @AGJamesUthmeier and @GovRonDeSantis. The dictatorship must end.
#Cuba Why has Cuba’s dictatorship denied the existence of political prisoners for nearly seven decades? Because acknowledging them would expose the true nature of a regime that imprisons people for exercising fundamental freedoms, contradicting the humanitarian image it has carefully cultivated internationally.
As Václav Havel explained in The Power of the Powerless, authoritarian systems construct a world of appearances in which lies become official truths and repression is disguised as legality.
Cuba’s denial serves four fundamental purposes: to preserve the regime’s legitimacy, conceal the courage and resistance of its citizens, evade international accountability, and whitewash political repression.
Every political prisoner exposes two truths the dictatorship seeks to hide: its willingness to repress and the determination of ordinary Cubans to resist.
By portraying prisoners of conscience as criminals, the regime seeks to erase not only their suffering, but also their ideals, their resistance, and the political persecution that led to their imprisonment.
Denying political prisoners is not merely denying repression. It is an attempt to erase the very existence of resistance to dictatorship.
My latest op-ed in Diario Las Américas: “Why Cuba Denies the Existence of Its Political Prisoners.”

The dictatorship of Russia killed my husband, Cuba's killed Rosa María's father, and Iran's regime tried many times to kill Masih.
This is what Yulia Navalnaya said, and she is right. The dictators of Russia, Cuba, and the Islamic Republic of Iran have one playbook: murdering freedom fighters.
Rosa María said Cuba is closer to freedom than many imagine, and that the best way to honor those who gave their lives for freedom is not only to remember their sacrifice, but to finish the task they began.
We stood together in Madrid to receive the FAES Freedom Prize. But the real prize belongs to those who are no longer with us. To the blinded women who lost their eyes to regime bullets and were even denied visas by Europe to stand with us. To every prisoner behind bars tonight for demanding freedom.
Our dictatorships are united. They share weapons, they share money, they share torture. Now democracies must be just as united to help the freedom fighters to end dictatorship.
We will finish the task they began. Freedom will win.
Together we are stronger.

A convicted former operative of the Cuban version of the KGB is running a state agency coordinating directly with DSA-linked American political organizations. Yeah, nothing to see here, right?
The DSA is a member of the National Network on Cuba. Every year, that group works hand-in-hand with a Cuban state entity called ICAP (the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples), which is sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department.
The president of ICAP is a convicted member of Cuba’s Wasp Network, identified in U.S. court records as operatives of the Directorate of Intelligence of Cuba, their main foreign intelligence service (basically, the Cuban KGB).
This is the global communist network the DSA is connected to.
#Cuba Democratic Spaces mourns Cuban poet and pro-democracy activist Leo Fernández Cruz, 45, who died in a traffic accident after denouncing prison abuses. Months earlier, dissident Diosbel Véliz Marín was fatally stabbed.
These deaths raise serious concerns in the context of nearly seven decades of political repression in Cuba. As in Russia and other authoritarian states, allegations of suspicious deaths of opposition figures demand independent scrutiny, particularly where authorities have been accused of concealing politically motivated killings as accidents.
The Cuban regime has pursued a systematic policy aimed at annihilating peaceful political opposition through thousands of repressive incidents annually. Over the decades, hundreds of thousands of Cubans are estimated to have experienced political imprisonment.
Democratic Spaces calls for independent investigations into these deaths, an end to political repression, and the immediate and unconditional release of all Cuban political prisoners.

¿Cómo se reconstruye una Cuba rota? @alexotaola

#Cuba Jimmy Johnson Agosto is a Cuban political prisoner. His “crime”? Exercising his fundamental right to freedom of expression by participating in the peaceful protests in Nuevitas, Camagüey, on August 18–19, 2022.
He was arrested on September 6, 2022, while returning from an electroencephalogram. According to Justicia 11J, he was subsequently coerced into a Soviet-style televised “forced self-incrimination,” broadcast by Cuban state television on October 7, 2022.
In March 2026, reports indicated that imprisonment and psychological abuse had taken a devastating toll: Jimmy was suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, and other psychiatric problems while reportedly being denied adequate medical care.
13 years for protesting. 13 years for demanding change.
We call for the immediate and unconditional release of Jimmy Johnson Agosto and all Cuban political prisoners.

#Cuba Democratic Spaces condemns the 8 and 9 year prison sentences recently sought by Holguín prosecutors against young Cuban audiovisual creators Ernesto Ricardo Medina and Kamil Zayas Pérez. Their weapon was not violence. It was words and ideas.
When peaceful expression can lead to years in prison, terms such as “one-party democracy” or “different democracy” become complicit language that sugarcoats oppression.
A dictatorship is a dictatorship.
We call for the immediate release of Ernesto and Kamil, the release of all Cuban political prisoners, and an end to the criminalization of peaceful dissent.
